About JFO Aviation
Hi there! My name is John McDermott. I am an Airline Transport Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor. Though flying airliners is my day job, I I have an intense love for General Aviation and flight instruction. I have worked with students at each stage of their aviation careers, and I am thrilled to help you reach your goals as well.
Bio: Sparknotes Version
I started my aviation career in July 2020. The first professional pilot in my family, it took time to figure out the nuances of the flight training industry: the steps I needed to take to become a professional, how to find the right flight school, and how to navigate each step of the process.
I completed everything from Private Pilot–Airplane Single Engine through Commercial Pilot–Single- and Multi Engine in the Chicagoland area while completing a four-year degree in a non-aviation field. I completed Flight Instructor training in South Florida before spending close to two years teaching full-time in both Florida and Pennsylvania. I am now a full-time airline pilot for a major US regional airline, though I continue teaching to share my expertise and passion with others.
I also have an interest in sharing the stories of aviation. This manifests in several ways. I feel an obligation to improve access to information that improves aviation safety, awareness, and study for free or reduced prices. I also have a growing interest in exploring how aviation gives people access to our wonderful country, both through commercial and general aviation, by exploring how aviation connects people and supports local businesses and employees. On a medium-term basis, look out for aviation media (both blogs and videography) that explores the impacts that aviation has on local communities.
With JFO Aviation, my goal is to share my love of aviation by offering not only my technical expertise but also to offer access to high-quality resources and storytelling. I am eager to make aviation more accessible to a range of pilots from students to professionals.
